Background of the Study
Environmental conservation is increasingly recognized as a critical global imperative, and educating the younger generation is key to sustainable ecological stewardship. In Borgu Local Government Area, Niger State, informal education has emerged as a promising approach for instilling environmental values and conservation practices among secondary school students. Unlike traditional classroom-based environmental education, informal education leverages community engagement, outdoor learning experiences, and hands-on activities to foster a deep connection with nature (Bello, 2024; Mohammed, 2023). Programs such as community clean-up campaigns, tree planting activities, nature walks, and environmental clubs provide students with practical experiences that emphasize the importance of preserving natural resources. Through these initiatives, students learn not only about the scientific aspects of environmental conservation but also about its socio-cultural significance. Informal educational settings offer a relaxed and interactive environment where learners can discuss environmental challenges, share local knowledge, and develop innovative solutions to conservation issues. The use of local examples and culturally relevant practices ensures that the message of environmental stewardship resonates with students’ everyday lives. In Borgu, environmental challenges such as deforestation, pollution, and unsustainable agricultural practices are pressing concerns. Informal education provides a platform for addressing these issues by empowering students to become proactive agents of change in their communities. The dynamic nature of these programs encourages creative problem solving and fosters a sense of responsibility toward the environment. However, the effectiveness of informal education in promoting environmental conservation is often hindered by limited resources, inadequate training for educators, and the absence of formal evaluation mechanisms (Mohammed, 2023). This study seeks to appraise the role of informal education in encouraging environmental conservation among secondary school students in Borgu. By combining qualitative insights with quantitative data, the research will evaluate the impact of current initiatives, identify best practices, and propose strategies to enhance the integration of environmental conservation into the educational experience. Ultimately, the findings are expected to contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally conscious society by equipping young learners with the knowledge and skills to protect their natural heritage (Bello, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
In Borgu, despite growing concerns about environmental degradation, many secondary school students exhibit limited awareness and engagement in conservation practices. Although informal education programs aimed at promoting environmental stewardship have been introduced, their impact remains inconsistent and under-documented. A key problem is the lack of structured and sustainable approaches that integrate environmental conservation into everyday learning experiences. Many programs are implemented sporadically and without the necessary follow-up, resulting in minimal long-term behavioral change. Additionally, resource constraints and insufficient training for facilitators often compromise the quality and consistency of these initiatives (Mohammed, 2023). The challenges are compounded by socio-economic factors that restrict access to quality environmental education for some students. Without a standardized framework to assess the effectiveness of informal environmental education, it is difficult to determine which approaches yield the best outcomes in terms of conservation attitudes and practices. This study aims to address these issues by evaluating the contribution of informal education to environmental conservation among secondary school students in Borgu. It will investigate the strengths and weaknesses of current programs, explore the barriers to effective environmental education, and identify opportunities for enhancing program delivery. By gathering data from multiple stakeholders—including students, educators, and community leaders—the research will provide a comprehensive analysis of how informal education influences environmental behavior. The ultimate goal is to develop actionable recommendations that can be used to design more effective, sustainable, and inclusive environmental education initiatives, thereby empowering students to become active stewards of their local environment (Bello, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the impact of informal education on promoting environmental conservation among secondary school students.
  • To identify challenges and gaps in current informal environmental education programs.
  • To propose strategies for enhancing the effectiveness of environmental conservation initiatives in Borgu.

Research Questions

  • How does informal education influence environmental conservation practices among students in Borgu?
  • What are the main challenges in implementing effective informal environmental education programs?
  • How can informal education be optimized to foster sustainable environmental stewardship?

Research Hypotheses

  • H₀: Informal education does not significantly influence students’ engagement in environmental conservation.
  • H₁: Informal education significantly enhances students’ environmental conservation practices.
  • H₂: Community-based environmental programs improve the overall effectiveness of informal environmental education.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it evaluates the role of informal education in fostering environmental conservation among secondary school students in Borgu. Its findings will provide critical insights for educators, environmental advocates, and policymakers on the effective integration of conservation practices into informal learning. By identifying best practices and addressing existing challenges, the research will contribute to building a more environmentally conscious generation committed to sustainable development (Mohammed, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms
